<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hair dye composition which is easy to enhance viscosity stability while inhibiting the scalp from staining and maintaining hair dyeability and a method of dyeing hair with the use of the same. <P>SOLUTION: The hair dye composition includes (A) a direct dye, (B) at least one organic solvent selected from an aromatic alcohol and an alkylene carbonate, and (C) water. The content of (C), water, is 1.0-20 mass%. The hair dye composition further contains (D) at least one kind of viscosity improver selected from an oligomer ester of a carboxylic acid including a dicarboxylic acid with a polyglycerin, 12-hydroxystearic acid, and dextrin palmitate.
