<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an object detection unit capable of detecting an object according to each of areas in a detection space including both an area in which misdetection of an object desires to be suppressed and an area in which missing of an object desires to be suppressed. <P>SOLUTION: A light emission part 31 is made to emit light for irradiation with a detection wave in a width direction of an entrance exit, and a light reception part 32 detects a reflected wave. A storage part 5 stores a temporary detection level for setting a lower limit of the quantity of light reception by the light reception part 32 used for temporary detection of an object and a primary detection level for setting a lower limit of the quantity of light reception by the light reception part 32 used for primary detection of the temporarily detected object according to the distance to the temporarily detected object. A distance measurement part 3 temporarily detects the object and calculates the distance to the temporarily detected object when the quantity of light reception of the reflected wave detected by the light reception part 32 exceeds the temporary detection level stored in the storage part 5.
