The purpose of the present invention is to provide a square-shaped nonaqueous electrolyte rechargeable battery, wherein expansion of electrode groups due to repetition of charging/discharging can be inhibited, and making the battery higher in energy density is easy. A nonaqueous electrolyte rechargeable battery of the present invention is provided with: a plurality of electrode groups each of which is composed by having a positive electrode, a negative electrode, and a separator wound around in flat shape; a nonaqueous electrolyte; and a square-shaped case that houses therein the plurality of electrode groups and the nonaqueous electrolyte. The shape of the transverse cross section of the case is rectangular, and the plurality of electrode groups are housed within the case such that the short-side direction of the transverse cross-sections of the plurality of electrode groups is perpendicular to the short-side direction of the transverse cross-section of the case, and the axial direction of the plurality of electrode groups is parallel to the height direction of the case.
