Provided are a position detecting device and a capsule-shaped endoscope system that are capable of performing, at high speed, a process for estimating the position and orientation of a capsule-shaped endoscope inside a body cavity. This device for detecting the position of a capsule-shaped endoscope includes: a receiver antenna unit that receives, with a plurality of receiver antennas (40), a wireless signal transmitted from a capsule-shaped endoscope inside a subject; a storage section (56) that stores the theoretical field intensity of the wireless signal received by each receiver antenna (40), the theoretical field intensity corresponding to the position, or the position and orientation, of the capsule-shaped endoscope within the subject; a field intensity comparing section (593) that compares predetermined values each calculated by using the difference between the received field intensity of the wireless signal received by each receiver antenna (40) and the theoretical field intensity stored in the storage means; and a position determining section (594) that determines, on the basis of the result of comparison by the field intensity comparing section (593), the position, or the position and orientation, of the capsule-shaped endoscope at which image data was captured. |
