A control mechanism for balancing the weight of a sliding panel, e.g. a vertically sliding window in the side door of a vehicle, comprises a flat spiral spring of the kind which normally coils up closely upon itself and in which the uncoiling movement of the spring is effected by applying tension to unroll the outer end of the coil whilst supporting the remaining coiled convolutions for free rotation as a unit without producing any substantial movement of any coiled convolution radially, or circumferentially, relatively to an adjacent coiled convolution, the uncoiled portion of the spring being anchored adjacent one face of the panel the lower edge of which is engaged between the body of the coil and the uncoiled portion of the spring. A glass panel 13, mounted in guides, not shown, to slide downwards in a pocket 12 when the window is opened, or to be raised to close an aperture above the waist rail 11 of a vehicle door, has its lower edge 17, with, or without, a metal frame 19, supported between the body 18 of a flat spiral spring 23 and the uncoiled portion 16 thereof, the upper end 14 of the spring being secured at 15 to the waist rail 11. The friction of the channel guides and the upward force of the spring is sufficient to maintain the panel 13 in its adjusted position. If desired, additional frictional control and adjustable locking devices can be used. In a modification a channel section metal frame, on the lower edge of the panel is provided with a downwardly directed flange which engages with the spring, and may be provided with a frame member, such as 19, or with a pad which may be impregnated with material, e.g. oil to protect the spring. |
