The axle system has outdoor unit (10) with maximum dimension transverse to an axis of rotation. A brake drum structure (2) has a front portion with a recess which extends transverse to the axis of rotation and larger than extension of outdoor unit. A drum shell extends parallel to the axis of rotation. The outdoor unit is arranged in the direction of the hub unit (6). The brake drum structure is displaced from the outdoor unit and fixed to the hub unit. An independent claim is included for method for manufacturing vehicle axle system.
