<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a washing machine including a damper whose damping force may be sufficiently increased. <P>SOLUTION: In a damper 21 for damping vibration of a water tub holding a drum (a rotary tub), a magnetic force is applied to a magnetic viscous fluid 49 disposed between a rod 23 and a yoke 39 by allowing magnetic flux to pass through the rod 23 in its diameter direction by a magnetic field generated by a coil 40 held in a cylinder 22. Differently from a case where magnetic flux is allowed to pass in an axial direction of the rod 23, magnetic saturation occurring because of restriction of passage of the flux by the cross-sectional area in the axial direction of the rod 23 may be avoided, and hence the yoke 39 and the coil 40 may be set to have large lengths along the axial direction of the rod 23. Therefore, much flux may be allowed to pass and a sufficient magnetic field may be applied to the magnetic viscous fluid 49.
