<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sewing machine and a thread cutting method for a sewing machine that can avoid an increase in power consumption when cutting a thread. <P>SOLUTION: After a thread cutting signal is input, a reverse solenoid is turned on at a timing of t5 to reverse a fabric feed direction. Then, at a timing of t8, a thread cutting solenoid is turned on to cut a needle thread and a bobbin thread. That is to say, the needle position for a last stitch of a seam is put on a position equivalent to the needle position for a second last stitch, and then the needle thread and the bobbin thread are cut. Thereby, it is possible to make even the remaining lengths of the needle thread and the bobbin thread remaining at the end of the seam at a back side of the fabric after cutting thread. Further, since the thread cutting solenoid is turned on after the reverse solenoid is turned off, an ON period of the reverse solenoid and an ON period of the thread cutting solenoid are not overlapped with each other.
