The system has a control device for determining and adjusting an operational parameter influencing formation of nitrous oxide, where the operational parameter acts on an operating mode of an air-compressing predominantly lean-operated internal combustion engine (1) and/or on an exhaust gas after-treatment component. The control device determines an estimated value for an actual amount of nitrous oxide emission with exhaust gas emitted to an environment, and changes the operational parameter. A selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalytic converter (36) comprises a zeolite coating. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an exhaust gas after-treatment system.
