The method involves specifying a parameter set and/or a processing schema of a classifier for different driving condition types. A current driving condition is determined using data of a sensor system and a driving parameter. A current parameter set and/or a current processing schema for the classifier are adjusted according to the determined current driving condition. An operating point of the classifier is selected based on the determined current driving condition such that a statistical ratio is set from a true positive classification to a false positive classification. The classifier is designed as a pedestrian recognition system or a camera-based sensor system. The driving condition type is selected from a group consisting of driving in a highway, driving in main street, driving in town, driving in side street, driving in play street or driving near school, kinder garden and pedestrian crossing. An independent claim is also included for a device for monitoring environment of a vehicle.
