PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of image processing used for various applications requiring color detection and/or classification.

SOLUTION: In receiving an image captured by a sensor, a reflectance spectrum for a test surface is decomposed into a linear combination of reflectance spectra of a set of test targets, and a coefficient vector calculated in this decomposition is used to predict a response of an imaging sensor to the test surface, where a plurality of such predicted responses include human skin tone detection.
