<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a horizontal rotary dryer for coal which can optionally select target powdered coal to be removed in response to the type of coal, etc. <P>SOLUTION: The horizontal rotary dryer of coal includes: a rotating cylinder 10 which has a supply port 41 of coal C1 and a blowing port 41 of carrier gas G1 on the one end side, and a discharge port 50 of dried coal C2 and exhaust gas on the other end side; a heating means 11 for heating the coal C1 inside this rotary pipe 10; and a classification hood 55 which covers the discharge port 50, has a fixed discharge port 57 of the dried coal C2 in a bottom 55d, and has a fixed exhaust port 56 of exhaust gas G2 in a top part 55u. The horizontal rotary dryer for coal includes: an upward flow generation means 58 for generating an upward flow within the classification hood 55; and a flow rate control means 14 for controlling the flow rate of the upward flow.
