<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an alumina-based composition which makes the trapping of nitrogen oxides contained in a gaseous fluid possible. <P>SOLUTION: This composition is formed by alumina, cerium and a divalent metal M chosen from the group which includes barium, strontium or an association of these two elements, and it is characterized in that at least 10% of the weight of element M, in weight of oxide to the total weight of the composition, is included and in that the aluminate compound of the metal element M of formula MAl<SB POS="POST">2</SB>O<SB POS="POST">4</SB>is not included.
