PURPOSE: A static VAR compensator and a control method thereof are provided to prevent the generation of an inrush current by applying a signal to a gate of an SCR(silicon-controlled rectifier) to operate the SCR. CONSTITUTION: A capacitor bank(111) includes one or more condensers. A reactor(112) is serially connected to the capacitor bank. An SCR(113) controls the capacitor bank and the reactor. A sensor(114) senses potential difference between an anode and a cathode of an SCR. A controller(115) turns on the SCR by applying a signal to a gate of the SCR. A reactive power measuring unit(116) measures reactive power.
