[Also in Groups XXII and XXV] Nails, each comprising a shank 10<1>, Fig. 4, with opposed flat surfaces 21<1> and having a groove 12 at the head end providing one or two lugs 13<1> adapted to be bent outwards before or during driving of the nail to form a head, are assembled into strips with facing flat surfaces stuck together over a zone 23, Fig. 1, and used in a nail-driving-machine having a magazine 15. To facilitate bending, the shank 10<1> may have notches 24, at the roots of the lugs. The nails are driven by a blade 19 slidable in a passageway 19<1> and having an end 20 which may be pointed or round or have cusps 27 as shown in Fig. 4. Projecting ridge 22 in the magazine engages grooves 12 to guide the strip, or alternatively a ridge may be provided to engage the grooves 24. The width of the passageway restricts bending of the lugs to the width of the blade until they are clear of the machine. A nail driven into wood is illustrated in Fig. 7. Where the heads are formed before assembling the nails into strips the magazine is modified to guide the strip by engaging the nail heads. |
