The method involves providing a side guide section (14), which extends along a transport direction of the container (2) in a transport device. A gripper unit (18) is provided with multiple grippers (26) for gripping the container. The gripper unit is moved in the transport direction to a releasing position for the container. An independent claim is also included for a device for discharging upright containers by a transport device.
