A method of masking a portion of two stacked components by attaching a sacrificial mask 4 to a locating jig 6 using sacrificial connectors 8 and disposing the jig 6 between the components whereby the mask 4 is positioned over a portion of each component. The sacrificial connectors 8 each have a pair of arms 22 which are inserted through a respective slot 10 in the mask 4 and then bent to lock the mask 4 to the jig 6. The jig 6 is circular and comprises two rings12a & 12b, each formed from a plurality of arcuate sections with each arcuate section being connected to two arcuate sections of the other ring. Each connector 8 is received in a respective recess 18 in the jig 6. The jig 6 and mask 4 can be used when a thermal barrier coating is applied to the internal surfaces of circular combustor rings. The jig 6 can be non-circular, being configured for the component for which its intended to mask, and can be used as a mask in painting, electron beam welding or laser trimming |
