A method and apparatus for controlling access to an electrical power network is disclosed. A rule based method is utilised, where rules or conditions associated with device usage are evaluated or compared against rules or conditions of a power network. The transfer of energy between the power network 10 and the device 26,28 is permitted upon a positive comparison between the device usage rule or conditions and the power network access rule or conditions. The network conditions or rules may relate to the cost of electricity, the capacity of the network, the voltage and frequency of electricity etc. The device rules or conditions may relate to accessibility hours, energy consumption limits at peak times, or the type of device. The device may be a vehicle, and energy may be received from the power network (i.e. to charge) or provided to the network. A user may set their own device usage rules. The device may be authenticated with the power network. The apparatus may comprise devices 26,28 and energy access points 22, where the energy access points receive the rules or conditions from the device 26,28 and the power network. |
