A vehicle 100 and a method of controlling its driveline are provided. The vehicle 100 has an engine 11, first and second groups of wheels and a driveline arranged to connect the engine 11 to the first and second groups of wheels such that the first group of wheels 12,13 is driven by the engine 11 when the driveline is in a first mode of operation and the second group of wheels 14,15 is additionally driven by the engine 11 when the driveline is in a second mode of operation. The driveline includes an auxiliary driveline 10 comprising an auxiliary driveshaft 123, a power transfer unit 150 operable by means of a PTU actuator to releasably couple the auxiliary driveshaft 123 to the engine 11. A releasable drive unit is operable by means of an actuator to releasably couple the auxiliary driveshaft 123 to the second group of wheels 14,15. The PTU actuator and drive unit actuator are powered by a common hydraulic system. The driveline typically comprises a power transfer clutch 152 and a rear drive unit 130 having two clutches 127. The system permits dynamic engagement of four wheel drive and is less prone to inducing electromagnetic interference than systems with electrical actuators. |
