A storage battery is provided with a filling tube 17 which encloses a rotatable sleeve 23, the tube and sleeve having slots 27, 25 at their lower ends. When the sleeve is rotated to bring the slots into registration electrolyte poured into the battery through the filling tube rises to the level 30, the level 28 being attained when the slots are out of register. The sleeve dan be rotated by the cap 20 after being removed and inverted the top of the cap being provided with a rib 32 which fits slots in the top of the sleeve. During the filling operation the vent 34 can be closed by the cap 20 which is formed with a cup 35 to fit over the vent. Another device for obtaining two alternative levels of electrolyte is shown in Fig. 5 in which a tube 48 has a collar 47 situated nearer to one end of the tube than the other. The collar rests on the inclined bottom of the well 41 and closes a gas vent 46. Liquid poured into the well rises in the battery to the level 28. A vented plug screwed into the well 41 tilts the collar 47 into the horizontal position thus opening the vent 46. A higher level of electrolyte in the battery is obtained by turning the tube 48 upside down. |
