Copolymers of acrylonitrile with a vinyl monomer containing a basic amino group are made by continuously adding at the reflux temperature from 30-98 per cent by weight of the vinyl monomer, and 2 to 70 per cent of acrylonitrile to an aqueous medium containing a water-soluble peroxy catalyst, a water-soluble salt of an aromatic sulphonic acid, including aldehyde condensed alkyl substituted aryl sulphonic acids, and an alkali metal salt of a fatty acid. The aqueous medium preferably contains a buffering agent such as sodium bicarbonate. The monomers may be added in a premixed stream, or in separate streams, and the catalyst may be added portionwise. Basic monomers mentioned are 2-vinyl-, 4-vinyl-, 3-vinyl-, 5-ethyl - 2 - vinyl -, 4,6 - dimethyl - 2 - vinyl-, 4 - ethyl - 2 - vinyl -, 2 - methyl - 5 - vinyl -, 6 - methyl - 2 - vinyl - pyridine, dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate, 2-vinyl- and 4-vinyl-quinoline. The sulphonic acid salt may be the sodium or potassium salt of a formaldehyde condensed mononaphthalene sulphonic acid or the sodium or potassium salt of a formaldehyde condensed alkylaryl sulphonic acid. The fatty acid salt may be sodium oleate, potassium oleate and common soaps obtained from the saponification of animal and vegetable oils. Catalysts mentioned are sodium peroxide, hydrogen peroxide, potassium persulphate, sodium percarbonate, sodium perborate, and the ammonium salts of these peroxy compounds. The polymers alone or admixed with other acrylonitrile copolymers are dyeable. Specification 676,580, [Group IV (c)], is referred to.
