Polymeric lactams containing a hydrocarbon chain containing recurring units of the formula <FORM:0752290/IV(a)/1> and containing also acrylic acid and vinyl amine units are prepared by reacting polyacrylyl chloride with sodium azide or hydroxylamine, and treating the reaction product with water. The proportion of free amino and carboxyl groups in the polymeric lactams may be increased by hydrolysis with sodium hydroxide, this reaction being reversible. The products may be used in making photographic layers. The polymerization is described of acrylyl chloride, with or without solvent, under the influence of ultra-violet light and 2,21-azobisisobutyronitrile as a catalyst.
