Materials are united adhesively by hardening between them at room temperature a mixture containing an ethylene oxide derivative of a phenol containing at least two ethylene oxide groups, a non-volatile solvent therefor and a liquid hardening agent. Suitable ethylene oxide derivatives of a phenol are those described in Specifications 629,111 and 630,647. Liquid hardening agents mentioned are polyamines, e.g. ethylene diamine or triethylene tetramine or products obtained by heating them with dicyandiamide or aromatic diamines. Caustic soda may be added to the liquid hardening agent. Non-volatile solvents mentioned are liquid esters of polybasic acids, e.g. dibutyl phthalate, tricresyl phosphate or the substance known as "Sipalin MOM" (Registered Trade Mark), or liquid toluene sulphonic acid derivatives such as "Plastomoll P" (Registered Trade Mark). A number of examples are given of the uniting of sheets of material, e.g. aluminium to aluminium, glass to glass, glass to "Melopas" (Registered Trade Mark), stainless steel to stainless steel with various combinations of resins, hardening agents and non-volatile liquids.
|
