A hydrokinetic coupling is filled and emptied by a valve comprising a slide 1 carrying a scoop tube 4 and having a port 2, the slide co-operating with a member 5 having ports 6, 7 communicating with a reservoir and a port 8 communicating with a feed pump. The position of the slide is controlled by a pneumatically-operated piston 9 permanently subject to pressure through a connection 10. On applying pressure to a connection 11 the piston and slide are driven to the left, and the scoop communicates with the port 6 and empties the coupling. To fill the coupling, air is allowed to escape through the connection 11 and the piston is moved rapidly until a stepped portion of its piston rod abuts a piston 12, in which position port 8 is fully open and the exit from the scoop tube is closed, so that the coupling fills. The piston 12 is moved by the step and drives oil from a cylinder 13 through an adjustable orifice 14 until a final position is reached in which port 8 is partly open and the scoop tube communicates with port 7 to allow a slight flow of oil for cooling purposes.
