Provided is a computer implemented method of comparing a test sample result set with another sample result set, the method including: entering, to a computer, information for the test sample result set on the one or more identities detected for a variable characteristic of DNA is the allele identity or allele identities present at a locus; entering, to a computer, information for the another sample result set on the one or more identities detected for a variable characteristic of DNA is the allele identity or allele identities present at a locus; computing, using the computer, a likelihood ratio for one hypothesis relative to an alternative hypothesis, wherein the likelihood ratio is defined as LR shown in the figure, where: C is the test result set from a test sample, S is the another sample result set, Hp is one hypothesis, Hd is an alternative hypothesis, U, is one of the supposed sources stated in Hd; and wherein the likelihood ratio is conditioned on quantity of DNA in the test sample and/or another sample result set; wherein the comparison includes the consideration of the term: f (C ] G) , where G denotes the supposed source genotype, being genotype S in the another sample result set used in the one hypothesis Hp and being genotype U, in one of the supposed sources used in the alternative hypothesis Hd; and wherein the likelihood is conditioned on DNA quantity in the form as shown in the figure, where Pr (x ] I(h)) is a probability distribution of DNA quantity given peak height information, I(h). Further provided are modifications of the formulas for the likelihood ratios to be used in the method.
