A writing instrument (1) in four parts. The writing instrument includes: a) a first ink cartridge (2), the first ink cartridge having a writing tip (3) at a first end (4) thereof; b) a cartridge holder (5) for attachment to a second end (6) of the first ink cartridge; c) a body portion (8) for receiving the cartridge holder and the first ink cartridge; d) an end cap (11) for engaging with the guide by means of a releasable snap fit mechanism. The body portion forms part of the exterior body of the writing instrument. A first end (9) of the body portion includes a guide (10) for releasably locating the cartridge holder, the guide being adapted to prevent rotation of the cartridge holder with respect to the body portion. The end cap forms part of the exterior body of the writing instrument. The end cap overlaps with a portion of the guide and/or the remainder of the body portion so that there is a substantially rigid and/or robust connection between the end cap and the body portion. The arrangement and construction is such that rotating the end cap relative to the body portion (or vice versa) has the effect of extending and/or retracting the writing tip of the first ink cartridge from a second end (12) of the body portion.
