The method involves taking samples of wood shavings (2), where each sample is taken from a set of wood pieces e.g. log type wood pieces. Each sample of wood shavings is analyzed for quantification of a set of compounds extractable from wood. A set of level quantified wood extractables is compared with a threshold value. The wood pieces are classified according to the result of comparison of the wood pieces. Analysis of the sample is carried bout by gas chromatography.
