A wrapper 1 for a smoking article comprises a base web having a nominal permeability, and a banded region comprising sufficient add-on material such that the wrapper 1 has permeability at the banded region less than the nominal permeability of the base web. The banded region comprises a substantially continuous band that is about 4mm or less wide and a leading edge and a trailing edge of the banded region are crenelated. The merlons 20 of the leading edge are transversely aligned with crenels 16 of the trailing edge and crenels 14 of the leading edge are transversely aligned with merlons 24 of the trailing edge.
