A connection device 24 for fastening two expanded cellular confinement structures 32, comprises an insertion member 48 having first and second opposite insertion ends 50, 52 with an insertion member extension 56 there between, the insertion member 48 having a first length between the first and second insertion ends, an integral shank 64 extending generally perpendicular from the insertion member extension 56 and spaced from each of the first and second insertion ends 50, 52 and an integral handle extending generally perpendicular from the shank 64 at an end of the shank remote from the insertion member 48. The handle has first and second handle ends with a handle extension 70 there between. The shank 64 is spaced from each of the first and second handle ends. The handle has a second length between the first and second handle ends. The shank has a third length between the insertion member and the handle member, where the second length is greater than the first length, and the third length is less than half of the first and second lengths.
