Data emitted by the sensor is evaluated by the measuring device (M) which is connected to the sensor (13, 14, 15), and the measuring device (M) supplies the sensor (13, 14, 15) with energy. In order to reliably limit the production of heat loss in a measuring device to a defined value and to be able to connect several sensors having various energy requirements to a measuring device, a test is carried out prior to operating the sensor (13, 14, 15) to test whether the operation of the sensor (13, 14, 15) exceeds the maximum requirement of electric energy of the measuring device (M).
