The power line (2) has a rheologically operated mechanical coupling (44,56,62,68) that is connected with a rheological material. The material changes the condition of the coupling from liquid to solid during the application of an electromagnetic field in response to the strength of the field. The power flow is changed or interrupted in the power line. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a rheological coupling with a force-fit connection of elements; and (2) a method for operating a power line.
