A paste material (5a) is applied to an outer peripheral surface (20a) of a sealing substrate (20) and to an outer peripheral surface (30a) of an element substrate (30) such that the paste material (5a) spans across the sealing substrate (20) and the element substrate (30). An organic electroluminescence element (4) is sealed using the paste material (5a). The paste material (5a) is heated and sintered, whereby a sealing member (5) made of glass frit is formed. Then, only that portion (5b) of the sealing member (5) which touches the outer peripheral surface (20a) of the sealing substrate (20) and the outer peripheral surface (30a) of the element substrate (30) is heated by laser irradiation such that the sealing substrate (20) and the element substrate (30) are welded together using the sealing member (5).
