<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording apparatus that can prevent failure attributed to direct contact of a thermal head with a platen, and to provide a method for controlling the recording apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: The recording apparatus includes: the thermal head 35 for recording by applying heat to a roll paper 20 to be colored; a printer body 11 having a roll paper storage unit 17 for storing the roll paper 20; a cover that is openably or closably provided in an opening connected to the roll paper storage unit 17 which is formed in the printer body 11; an automatic cover opening mechanism for opening the cover; a control unit for opening the cover with the automatic cover opening; and a recording medium detector for detecting the roll paper 20 in the recording position of the thermal head 35.
