<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a distributed polarizer capable of controlling a polarization direction of illumination light, and a projection type liquid crystal display device capable of achieving high brightness or high contrast or both of them by using the distributed polarizer. <P>SOLUTION: A distributed polarizer 4 includes at least: a first region having a first transmission axis direction; a second region having a second transmission axis direction different from the first transmission axis direction; and a third region having a third transmission axis direction different from any of the first and second transmission axis directions.
