The invention relates to methods for detecting at least one dimeric or trimeric catecholamine metabolite, especially dimeric homovanillic acid, in a body fluid, such as urine, said body fluid being subjected to a detection method for the qualitative or quantitative detection of the dimeric or trimeric catecholamine metabolite. Said methods are suitable for the early diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson's disease or Alzheimer's disease.
