<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for controlling image density, by which occurrence of problems such as decrease in image density or carrier deposition can be prevented, the problems caused by a rapid toner replenishing operation or no operation of toner replenishment, and to provide an image forming apparatus using the method. <P>SOLUTION: The method for controlling image density is carried out in an image forming apparatus including: a developing device 4 that stores a two-component developer and operates at a plurality of operational speeds; toner concentration detecting means 5 detecting a toner concentration in the developing device 4; toner replenishing means; storage means 20 storing a toner concentration reference value Vterf; toner replenishment control means 25 controlling an operation of the toner replenishing means based on the results of comparing an output value Vt of the toner concentration detecting means 5 with the toner concentration reference value Vtref, and based on the information of a formed image; and correcting means 24 correcting differences in output values of the toner concentration detecting means 5 at the plurality of operational speeds of the developing device 4.
