A display device (100) is provided with a screen (5), a projector (3), and a control means (30). The optical properties of the screen (5) can be changed. The projector (3) projects image light constituting an image on the screen (5). The control means (30) switches the optical state of a region containing a location on the screen (5) where the image light is projected from a transmission state to a scattering state modulated by time or space, in such a manner that the image light has positive transmittance, which enables an object on the opposite side of the screen (5) to be recognized from both sides, whether the image light is in a state of being projected or whether the image light is in a state of not being projected.
