The invention relates to a water-dilutable alkyd-acrylic resin intended to be employed in lacquers, paints and inks. According to the invention, the process is carried out by copolymerization of vegetable oils esterified with acrylic monomers, in two stages. During the first stage there takes place the alcoholysis of a mixture of fatty acids, selected from soy and linseed fatty acids, with trimethylol-propane, neopentyl glycol or methyl-propylene glycol, at a temperature of 150°C, after which isophthalic acid is admixed and the temperature is increased to 240°C and maintained at this level until an acidity index of up to 10 mg/g is obtained, the mixture being then cooled down to 150°C, at this temperature there being admixed trimellitic anhydride in a 1:1 solution in methyl-propylene glycol and maleic anhydride, the reaction mass being then heated up to 180°C and maintained at this level until a value of 70 mg KOH/g of the acidity index is reached, the entire mixture is cooled down to 150°C and then there is introduced the entraining agent, butoxy-ethanol, ethoxy-pentanol or methyl-propylene gylcol, while, during the second stage, a mixture of styrene, methyl methacrylate and 3% ditert butyl peroxide is added thereto as drops, for 2 h, the temperature is increased to 170°C and maintained at this level until an acidity index of 50 mg KOH/g is reached, the entire mixture is cooled down to 100°C and is diluted with a mixture of equal parts of methyl-propylene glycol and butanol, is neutralized with triethylene amine until a pH<7 is obtained and is diluted with water. |
