Provided is an organic electroluminescent element having high external extraction quantum efficiency, a low driving voltage, a small voltage increase over time, and a long emission life. This organic electroluminescent element has at least: an anode; a light emitting layer containing at least one phosphorescent dopant; and at least one electron transport layer. The organic electroluminescent element is characterized in that: the electron transport layer contains at least one electron transport material; the electron transport layer has a film thickness in the range of 50-200nm; and crystal grains of the electron transport material are present in the electron transport layer, with X-ray diffraction lines from said crystal grains being observed.
