<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for determining a state of a blood sample. <P>SOLUTION: The method includes providing a blood sample, providing a measuring probe having a pump for suction and discharge, inserting the measuring probe into the blood sample for a selected distance, measuring the pressure between the sample and the pump during sample suction or sample discharge, comparing the measured pressure with a reference value, and generating a signal indicating the presence or lack of a state. A method for confirming or detecting the presence of a selective layer of a blood constituent component in a centrifugally separated blood sample includes measuring a pressure of a suspected selective layer in the measuring probe during suction and discharge, and comparing the measured pressure with the reference value. In the case where the measured pressure and the reference value are substantially equal, the selective layer of the blood constituent component is confirmed.
