PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an article of footwear that includes an upper having a matrix layer and a method for manufacturing the same.

SOLUTION: The upper 20 includes a matrix structure 40 that defines a plurality of apertures 43. The apertures 43 may have an elongate configuration to impart differences in the extensibility of the upper 20 in different directions. For example, the matrix layer 40 may be formed from a plurality of segments 41 that cross each other to define the apertures 43.
