The method involves identifying an identity card identifier (ID) by a system, and transmitting the identified ID to a host for transmission to a financial institution (18) for forming payment transactions using previously deposited payment data. A card holder is authenticated at a central system using the ID to deposit payment data. The ID is transmitted to the central system by a reader for the identity card. The payment data is passed to a transaction generator (16) by the central system. Electronic payment transactions are formed by the transaction generator and passed to a bank system.
