<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an indirect heating type dryer which is configured to keep a high sludge filling ratio, consequently eliminates wasteful heat dissipation. <P>SOLUTION: The indirect heating type dryer 2 conveys a treated object 10 in a casing 12 while heating the treated object. The indirect heating type dryer includes the casing 12 having an elliptical cross section, a pair of rotary shafts 14 which are spaced in the direction of the major axis of the ellipse and are parallel to each other, projections 15 which are spirally provided around rotary shafts 14, and a treated object storage space 22 provided between the rotary shafts 14 and the casing 12.
