<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect contact and crossing of elevator ropes. <P>SOLUTION: The elevator includes a car, a counterweight, a plurality of ropes 40, a sheave, and a rope crossing monitoring system 70. The plurality of ropes 40 are wound around the sheave in a state that they are arranged in parallel spaced from each other and connect the car to the counterweight. The rope crossing monitoring system 70 includes a conduction part 72, a power supply 74, a current value detection part 76, a current change detection part 78, and a control part 80. The conduction part 72 electrically connects the plurality of ropes 40 in series and composes a circuit together with the plurality of ropes. The power supply 74 supplies a current to the circuit. The current value detection part 76 detects a value of the current that flows in the circuit. The current change detection part 78 detects a change in the current value detected by the current value detection part.
