A touchscreen-enable mobile terminal and a method for outputting text data in accordance with a touch gesture made to the mobile terminal are provided. The method includes displaying text data on a screen in a text output mode, detecting a touch gesture, determining whether the touch gesture is followed by a movement, and outputting, when the touch gesture is followed by the movement, a text selected among all displayed text data according to a direction of the movement. The user can select the text data to be output with a touch gesture. Also, the user can recognize the text data selected by a touch gesture in the form of a vibration or a sound output.
