768,702. Capacitors. SIEMENS & HALSKE AKT.-GES. May 27, 1954 [May 27, 1953], No. 15643/54. Class 37. In the manufacture of an electric capacitor by rolling together two metal-foil electrodes interleaved with strips of a synthetic thermoplastic resin, an outer casing for the capacitor is formed by winding at least one additional turn of the plastic strips around the capacitor body and then fusing them to the body and simultaneously severing them by the application of heat and pressure. In the arrangement shown, the capacitor comprises polystyrene strips 2, 3 which are wound on to the capacitor from supply reels (not shown), the strips being severed and simultaneously fused to the capacitor body by the rotation of the handle 5 in an anticlockwise direction, the portion 4 effecting the severing and fusing operation being electrically heated by the coil 9. The portion 4 may contain one or more resilient inserts to enable it to conform to the shape of the capacitor body. Preferably the dielectric strips comprise stretched polystyrene, heat treatment being applied to the capacitor after its winding in order to cause the dielectric windings to shrink and fuse together. It is also stated that the invention may be applied to other forms of capacitor, e.g. plate capacitors, the capacitor body being encased in one or more turns of the synthetic thermoplastic material. |
