<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a direct liquid type fuel cell diaphragm having both high alcohol impermeability and moderate proton conductivity. <P>SOLUTION: When the diaphragm for the direct liquid type fuel cell is manufactured, a polymerizable composition containing at least (a) an aromatic polymerizable monomer prepared by bonding one polymerizable group, at least an alkyl group in which carbon numbers are 2 or more, and at least one hydrogen atom to an aromatic ring, (b) a cross-linkable polymerizable monomer, and (c) a polymerization initiator is brought into contact with a porous film to fill the polymerizable composition into void parts the porous film has, thereafter, the polymerizable composition is polymerized and cured, and succeedingly, a cation exchange group is introduced into the aromatic ring originated from the aromatic polymerizable monomer.
