Improvements in or relating to glueing machines

A gluing machine comprises feed rollers defining a feed path for a blank having a flap, a glue roller rockably mounted for movement toward and away from the feed path, the glue roller being normally disposed away therefrom, and means operable in dependence upon the position of the blank for effecting movement of the glue roller into the feed path to apply the glue to the blank or a part thereof. As shown, blanks 14 from scoring, slitting and folding mechanism are delivered to a gluing machine 10 at suitably spaced intervals and at a constant delivery speed by a conveyer 12. The blanks are folded into four sections 14a, 14b, 14c, 14d, the end section 14d having an integral gap 18, to be coated with glue at the station 10, which comprises a fixed platen 22 and an adjustable pressure head 24 supported on a frame 26, which also has side walls 30, 32 between which is a hollow support 34. Aligned stub shafts 36, 38, journalled in the side walls 30, 32, form a rocking axis for a glue pan 40, 100, which has a glue applying roller 42 journalled in the sides of the glue pot 40. Parallel to the axis of the roller 42 is a feed roller 50, journalled in the walls of the support 34. The rollers 42, 50 are geared to a main drive gear 58, driven from a suitable source (not shown). A glue transfer system is provided between the rollers 42 and 50 and a scraper 54 may be arranged to co-operate with the roller 42. The pressure head 24 comprises a cradle 64 mounted for up-and-down movement relative to the bed on rods 66, 68 and biased downwardly by springs 70, 72, the movement being limited by nuts 74, 76. Feed rollers 78, 80 are journalled in the cradle 64, and co-operate with the rollers 42, 50. The upper feed rollers are geared to a drive gear 86. A driven feed roller 94, laterally offset from the remaining rollers, is provided to keep the section 14a of the blank in proper folded relation with the margin 14a, underlying the flap 18. The part 100 of the glue pot is coupled to the plunger 98 of a solenoid 96, which is controlled by switches actuated by the leading and trailing edges of the box blank, so that the glue pot assembly is intermittently rocked about the axis of the stub shafts 36, 38 to move the glue applying roller into the feed path.
