The invention relates to a transport system for handling baggage in baggage processing at airports, wherein the baggage is transported in areas between check-in and the aircraft. In order to create a transport system for handling baggage in baggage processing at airports having greater flexibility with respect to both the system layout and the process layout, and reducing space requirements and thus the investment costs due to the flexibility, the invention proposes that at least one floor-bound, automatically controlled and guided, steerable carrier vehicle (1) having a drive is provided for transporting the baggage (4) at least over a partial route area, on which one baggage item (4) lying thereon respectively can be transported to a determined destination.
