<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a water dispersion for ink-jet recording, having an excellent dispersion stability while keeping a weight absorbance and a print density and to obtain an aqueous ink containing the water dispersion obtained by the production method. <P>SOLUTION: The method for producing a water dispersion for ink-jet recording has a process 1 of preparing an azo-based pigment by subjecting a diazo compound and a coupler component to a coupling reaction to give a coupling reaction product and heat-treating the coupling reaction product at 45-100°C, a process 2 of preparing a water dispersion by dispersing the azo-based pigment prepared by the process 1 into an aqueous medium and a process 3 of heat-treating the water dispersion prepared by the process 2 at 43-100°C and at a temperature equal to or lower than the heat treatment temperature in the process 1.
